The Ultimate Guide to UK Personalised Plates: Rules, Regs, and Scoring the Perfect Football Plate

Whether you’re a die-hard Red, a lifelong Blue, or follow a local underdog, there is no better way to show your club loyalty than with a football-themed personalised registration.
As a DVLA-registered dealer, we live and breathe number plates. Unlike many brokers who just act as middlemen, Team Reg owns all the plates we sell. This means when you see a plate on www.teamreg.co.uk, it’s sitting in our "changing room" ready for a quick transfer to your vehicle.
However, before you sign your star signing, there are a few "rules of the game" set by the DVLA that you need to know. Here is everything you need to keep your plate legal and onside.
1. The Golden Rule: You Can’t Make a Car Look Newer
This is the most important rule in the industry. You cannot put a registration mark on a vehicle that makes it look younger than it actually is.
Example: If you have a 2012 (62 plate) Ford Focus, you cannot put a "74" (2024) series plate on it.
Why? It’s a fraud prevention measure. However, you can put an older plate on a newer car. If you’ve got a brand-new Tesla and want to put a classic 1990s-style plate on it, you’re good to go!
2. Spacing and Fonts: Keep it Professional
We’ve all seen them—plates where the bolts are strategically placed to turn a "1" into an "L" or where the letters are squeezed together to spell a name.
At Team Reg, we love a clever plate, but we always advise staying within the legal requirements:
Font: You must use the standard "Charles Wright" font.
Spacing: You cannot move letters or numbers around to create words.
Characters: No "honeycomb" effects or non-UK flags.
If the police or an MOT tester decide your plate is unreadable, you could face a fine of up to £1,000 and, in some cases, the DVLA may permanently withdraw the registration mark.
3. The Physical Plate: BS AU 145e
Since September 2021, all new plates must meet the BS AU 145e British Standard. These plates are made of tougher material and are designed to be more easily read by ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras. When you buy from a registered dealer like us, you can rest assured that the paperwork is handled correctly so you can get your physical plates printed by a legal supplier.
4. Transferring the Plate (The Paperwork)
When you buy a plate from Team Reg, we handle the heavy lifting. To put a plate on your car, you’ll need:
The V5C (Logbook): Your vehicle must be registered with the DVLA in the UK.
An Active MOT and Tax: The vehicle must be taxed (or have a SORN in place for a certain period) and have a valid MOT.
If you aren’t ready to put the plate on a car yet, don’t worry! We can hold the plate on a Retention Document (V778) or a Certificate of Entitlement (V750) for up to 10 years.
5. Why Choose Team Reg for Your Football Plate?
There are plenty of places to buy plates, but here’s why fans choose us:
We Own Our Stock: Because we own all our plates, there’s no waiting for a third-party seller to find their paperwork. The transaction is direct, secure, and fast.
