They initially called the football club Hotspur Football Club, taking inspiration from the historical figure Harry Hotspur. The club's official history says the founders admired the character and his gallant adventures.

There was, however, a problem.

Another Hotspur FC already existed in London, and confusion over the two clubs' post eventually became an issue. In 1884, the word Tottenham was added, creating the name we know today:
