From 1982 to Salzburg: Reliving Aston Villa’s Super Cup Glory

There is something truly special in the air around B6 right now. Fresh off our incredible UEFA Europa League triumph, Aston Villa is officially back on the map of European football elite. The history books are being rewritten by Unai Emery and the boys, and it has set up a mouth-watering, historic date: On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Aston Villa will face Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria.

It has been a long time coming. In fact, it has been 44 years since the Villans last contested and lifted this prestigious piece of silverware. As we prepare to invade Austria this August, we’re looking back at the last time we won the Super Cup, and how you can show your undeniable pride on the road to Salzburg with Team Reg.

Flashback to 1982: When Villa Ruled Europe and Tamed Barcelona

To understand the magnitude of this August's clash, we have to travel back to the legendary 1982 campaign. Having famously conquered Europe by beating Bayern Munich to lift the European Cup, Tony Barton’s Villa booked a two-legged European Super Cup showdown against a fiercely competitive Barcelona side, holders of the Cup Winners' Cup.

The tie actually crossed over into January 1983, and it was a battle for the ages. After a narrow 1-0 defeat at the Nou Camp in the first leg, the Catalan giants came to a rocking Villa Park expecting to shut up shop. What followed was an evening of pure, unadulterated drama and grit—remembered by many as one of the most fiery nights in the stadium's history.

Villa turned the tie on its head. A late 80th-minute goal from the brilliant Gary Shaw sent the match into extra time. With the atmosphere reaching a fever pitch and tensions boiling over on the pitch (resulting in three red cards!), Villa's legendary spirit took over. A rebound penalty from Gordon Cowans in the 100th minute and a bullet header from Ken McNaught just four minutes later sealed an unforgettable 3-0 victory (3-1 on aggregate).

Captain Dennis Mortimer lifted the trophy, and Aston Villa were officially crowned the super-kings of Europe.

The Next Chapter: Salzburg, August 2026

Fast forward to today. After waiting over four decades, the Claret and Blue army are packing their bags for a European final once again. Facing a star-studded PSG in Salzburg is going to be an epic encounter, and it represents everything the club has fought so hard to return to.

Whether you’re driving across the continent to Austria, flying out for the match, or holding down the fort back home in Birmingham, this is a moment of immense club pride. And what better way to show the world where your loyalty lies than by upgrading your ride for the journey?
