After you successfully assign your registration online at the DVLA portal, you must complete these four essential steps before driving:
• 1. How soon must I fit my new plates? You must fit your physical plates immediately after receiving the online "Success" confirmation. It is a legal offence to drive with your old registration once the change is processed.
• 2. Do I need to tell my insurance company? Yes. You must notify your insurer immediately. Failing to update your registration number can invalidate your policy, as the police ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) systems will flag your vehicle as uninsured if the plate doesn't match the database.
• 3. When will my new Log Book (V5C) arrive? The DVLA will automatically send a new V5C reflecting your private registration. This typically arrives within 3 to 5 working days for online applications, though the DVLA officially advises it can take up to 4–6 weeks.
• 4. What about my Congestion Charge or ULEZ accounts? You must manually update any automatic payment accounts, including Auto Pay for ULEZ, Dart Charge, or resident parking permits. These systems do not update automatically and may issue fines if the old plate is still on the account.
